When nationalism becomes nativism

McCain Rips Supreme Court Decision on Guantanamo – From The Road:

Calling it “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country,” John McCain ripped into the Supreme Court’s decision to allow Guantanamo detainees access to civilian trials for the second day in a row. “We’re now going to have the courts flooded with so-called “habeas corpus suits” against the government, whether it be about the diet, whether it be about the reading material,” McCain said. “Our first obligation is the safety and security of this nation and the men and women who defend it. This decision will harm our ability to do that.”

No, Mr. McCain. Your first obligation, in fact your first duty, is to defend the Constitution and uphold the fundamental principles it was designed to protect. Canceling the right of habeas corpus was an atrocity, the narrow margin by which the Supreme Court revoked this cancellation was a slightly lesser atrocity.

The idea that only U.S. citizens deserve fundamental rights is repugnant to me, and smacks of racism. And remember, fellow citizen, before you cry “terrorism,” that it is they who get to define terrorist.

Also, as pointed out here, the part that I emphasized above doesn’t make much sense, and betrays an ignorance of how habeas corpus works.
