Call it a rose if you want…
But it still smells like a cow pile.
Mike Gravel: Libertarian for President, and they said it without any quotation marks.
Gravel, who had seemed to be flirting with the Green Party in March, announced this week that he is quitting the Democrats and registered as a Libertarian.
“I’m joining the Libertarian Party because it is a party that combines a commitment to freedom and peace that can’t be found in the two major parties that control the government and politics of America,” declared Gravel, who was elected to the Senate in 1968 and served two terms before his defeat in a 1980 Democratic primary. “My libertarian views, as well as my strong stance against war, the military industrial complex and American imperialism, seem not to be tolerated by Democratic Party elites who are out of touch with the average American; elites that reject the empowerment of American citizens I offered to the Democratic Party at the beginning of this presidential campaign with the National Initiative for Democracy.”
Libertarian views? Let’s take a look at his “libertarian views.”
Global Warming/Climate Change Senator Gravel believes that global climate change is a matter of national security and survivability of the planet. As President, he will act swiftly to reduce America’s carbon footprint in the world by initiating legislation to tax carbon at the source and cap carbon emissions.
In other words: More laws, more taxes.
Healthcare Senator Gravel advocates a universal healthcare system that provides equal medical services to all citizens, paid for by a retail sales tax (a portion of the Progressive Fair tax). Citizens would pay nothing for health benefits.
Social Security Senator Gravel wants to put real money, rather than borrowed money, in the Social Security Trust Fund. He advocates investing it properly and identifying the interests of individual beneficiaries so they can know what their retirement fund is and leave surplus funds to heirs.
“Real money”? You mean as in actual gold-based currency instead of the counterfeit fiat currency that has been forced on us? No, I didn’t think so.
Hold on, I’ve been saving the best for last.
While Senator Gravel fully supports the 2nd Amendment, he believes that fundamental change must take place with regards to gun ownership. The senator advocates a licensing program where a potential gun owner must be licensed as well as properly trained with a firearm before they may own one.
Any system of licensing means that permission must be acquired from some government bureaucrat “in authority” in order to possess a firearm. This is infringement. This is not support of the Second Amendment. More importantly, it is a blatant violation of the fundamental human right of self protection.
He doesn’t trust us with our guns. Therefore he cannot be trusted. End of story.
UPDATE: More from The Liberty Papers.
Frankly, the fact that the LP is even welcoming this crypto-socialist into the party is strong evidence that it no longer deserves to be taken seriously.
Not that they were ever taken seriously to begin with–liberty being such a quaint concept. But a token scan of the current crop of leading LP candidates shows that LPers are mostly image and no substance.
